Your style of leadership has gotten you exactly where you are today. If you’re enjoying the benefits of money flowing in, and the systems in your business working, then your style of leadership has provided that stability, that structure. But here’s the other downside to that. To grow to the next level, to continue to evolve and innovate in your company, to serve at the next level, to make a next-level impact requires another level of you. And when you think about your leadership, it’s not always just about adding more people. It’s about really engaging the people in a different way.

One of the things that I say to my clients a lot is this phrase, stop managing the work and start leading the people. So what does that mean?
[0:48]
Well, a lot of companies get to where they are because they’re managing the work. They’re managing the conversation around the customers, the milestones, maybe they’re managing profitability. They’re managing The data, the metrics, all of those things are necessary for a company to grow. But at some point in time, you have to go beyond just the conversations on the work, the services, the products, the technology, the metrics, because when you manage the work, everything maybe getting done at some time, that’s not going to take you to the next level. So what do you do about it?
[1:26]
As a leader, you must continue to evolve, you must continue to push yourself to think about how you could evolve so that you can serve the business in a new way. And one of the best ways you can do that is by leading the people and not managing the work by developing their confidence, their courage, their clarity, their vision, their ability to solve problems, resilience, all of the things that made you who you are today, a lot of your employees need a dose of that.
[1:56]
And so you’ve got to be willing to take your own personal development to a deeper level so that you can actually lead the people, you’re going to change your mindset. Sometimes, you’ve got to shift the way you approach the work, instead of just showing them how to do it. You’ve got to show them where you’re going. And let them figure out how, when you trust your employees enough, you can stop managing the work and start leading the people. When you actually make this change in your business, here’s what happens.
[2:25]
You show up to work, knowing that your team is prepared for the challenges ahead, that they’re anticipating the innovations that are necessary. They’re anticipating how to serve the clients. When the numbers start to dip, they’re anticipating what to do next, instead of waiting for you to tell them what to do next. Because when you manage the work, you weren’t really developing the people. You’re just getting the work through. But when you lead the people, you develop those people.
[2:54]
They will do that for you. They will begin to manage the work and overtime that will no longer work. And I say that with a smile because we have to continue to evolve, then you have to focus on leading the leaders and developing new stages of leadership inside of companies.
