What Each Level of Leadership Means
1. Anti-Leader
The Anti-Leader thrives on control, leading through fear and ego. Misguided by their false sense of leadership, they micromanage and stifle growth, creating a toxic environment where true leadership cannot flourish.
2. Transactional Leader
Focused on tasks and day-to-day operations, the Transactional Leader is driven by getting things done. Overwhelmed and reactive, their schedule is dictated by others, leaving little room for strategic thinking or development.
3. Strategic Leader
Strategic Leaders are growth-focused and navigate change with intent. They prioritize execution but often struggle to find time to develop others, leaving their leadership potential partially untapped.
Leadership Ravine –
The Leadership Ravine is a treacherous gap between focus on the WORK and developing the PEOPLE. It’s a challenging journey where leaders are frequently pulled back into old habits, struggling to break free and evolve.
4. Exceptional Leader
People-driven and committed to developing future leaders, Exceptional Leaders excel in nurturing talent. Real Growth Requires the RIGHT Leadership
Let me share my most important tool for being a better leader. The 5 Levels of Leadership is like a “map,” and this proven tool is designed to help CEOs evaluate their current level of leadership and elevate their leadership effectiveness.
- STEP 1—Evaluate Your Current Leadership Level: Precisely identify your current leadership level and its impact on your organization. This step is the “where are you now” part of your journey. For example, “transactional leaders” aren’t bad but don’t have the highest impact on the organization.
- STEP 2—Select Your Ideal Level of Leadership: As you evolve as a leader, you can select the next level of leadership so you can be intentional about growing into the leader your team and organization deserve. For example, Raising the level of “exceptional leader” is usually necessary for a CEO to develop a fully aligned executive team and a strong leadership pipeline for more company growth.
- STEP 3 – Define and Implement Effective Strategies to Reach Your Ideal Leadership Level: You can research your own path to being a better leader if you want by reading and being part of group programs like YPO and EO.
