Fire Yourself – Letting Go is the Path to Faster Growth – Behind the Scenes

When you get to a certain point in your business growth, you will face a series of decisions about letting go of the day-to-day work. Another way to look at growing your company is that you will need to fire yourself. I have operated many businesses past the $5 million mark in revenue. I had to wrestle with letting go of the work that I became good at to keep the growth going. Today’s behind the scene video takes a look at firing yourself and letting go of your current work to activate more growth.

Today I brought a lighter with me to the set. It’s one of those that you use with your grill. So, what does a lighter have to do with your leadership, and you?

Well, it’s a symbol. If you want to take your business to the next level, if you really want to grow, you want to empower your team, you want them to take ownership, here’s what you have to do. You gotta fire yourself. Yep, I said it, you have to fire yourself because you are the limiting force inside your business, you’re the bottleneck.

I’ve done many videos about this before, but it keeps coming up over and over within my clients.

This is a behind the scenes video. I asked a client the other day this particular question: “Have you ever thought about firing yourself?” There was silence for a moment, but what came next was really powerful. He’s like “I know I need to let go, I’m just not sure how. “There’s so many things going on, “there’s so many meetings I have to be in. “I want to make sure that we do the things right. “That I’m involved, that I’m in the know, “that’s part of my own leadership.”

Here’s the thing, as your company grows, you know that you have to systematically let go of some of the things you’re doing. You have to fire yourself from those particular duties. And you’ve gotta let someone else take over the charge. That is the key to growing your business and growing yourself. Having the courage to let go of some of the day-to-day duties is exactly what it takes for you to keep growing your business, to keep growing yourself.

Hopefully, you’ve hired the right people, you know that they can actually do more than they’re doing. They want to, they actually want to take ownership of this, if you inspire them with your leadership. That’s the core of what I talk about with my clients, what interviews we have on the show, the Growth Think Tank, but you’ve got to learn to let go and fire yourself. I wanted to bring this topic up today because it means just as much today as it always has. “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.”

That Marshall Goldsmith book is really a powerful statement, people quote it all the time, it’s so true. You’ve gotta fire yourself. Are you willing to do it? My name’s Gene Hammett, I help leaders go through the defining moments of their own leadership. They know they need to grow, they know they need to let go of something, to move to a higher level, that’s where I excel. This is what I do, all day, every day, helping leaders let go. Sometimes you have to fire yourself, sometimes it’s something else.

I do videos like this to help you tune in to what’s going on. Stay tuned for the next video, if you missed the last one we talked about learning to rest, not to quit. Make sure you find that on the podcast, growththinktank.Com. As always, lead with courage. We’ll see you next time.
