Today. I want to talk to you about the power of leadership. Now you are probably listening to this because you are the founder CEO of a company that is growing fast, wants to grow fast, or just wants to go beyond where it is today. And if you’re a leader, then you’ve got to understand that leadership is the cornerstone of growth.

[00:00:18] Let me explain that. You can look at data out there and they will talk about the idea of your company is really important. And it is important. If you’ve got a crappy idea, it will be very hard to get it to grow. But you also want to look at the timing of it. When is the timing of when you’re executing on this? And a lot of times we can’t control the timing. We have to wait for our opportunities.

[00:00:43] There’s a great story of Netflix, where they had to wait for download speeds to actually catch up to what they wanted to do by streaming movies. And so they were in a different kind of business model, shipping DVDs out, but they had to wait for the right time.

[00:00:59] Now. Many times that’s where you are, but you’ve got this idea. You’ve got timing. You’ve got the, you know, the old business model aspect of this, you know, choosing the right business model is a very important thing. But from what I’ve seen across all of the factors and the levers that are important in growing a company, the one thing that limits the company the most is you.

[00:01:21] The leader, if you want to be an extraordinary leader, you’ve got to be intentional about expanding from where you are today to going to where you need to be. And you know that you’ve got to let go of something in order to be this play at a higher level, whether it be you got to let go of being a firefighter, maybe you’ve got to let go of being a micromanager. Maybe you’ve got to let go of being the doer and move up.

[00:01:48] This five phases of growth that I have with leadership. And I’ll explain a little bit about what that is today, but you’ve got to be intentional about how you move up behind that. And I’m going to throw up on the screen, this graphic, whether you start out as a doer it’s important to know that you’ve got to understand where you are. Are you the doer of the business?

[00:02:09] You also have to move up to the next level you do that. You’re the manager, the manager is the person who manages the chaos of the business. And it really does allow you to leverage your time differently because you’ve hired people and you’re managing this, but when you really get that right, you’re going to create something really powerful that is beyond yourself and managing, which is the systems. In order to graduate to the next level, you’ve got to create the right systems inside your company. And those systems will allow you to be the director of the systems and you’ll still be managing the people. You’ll probably still be doing some of the stuff, but you’re rising up the levels and the five phases of growth.

[00:02:50] Now in this level, your big challenge is overwhelmed. Overwhelm gets you all the time. You’re going to too many meetings. You’ve got too many things. You’re juggling got too many projects that your personally involved with and you’re the one taking ownership of it. And that limits you. The way to graduate from this director level is to empower your executive leadership team. When you empower your executive leadership team to the really highest level, they are taking ownership of their departments. Now there’s still a lot of work to be done, but you’re able to move from director to leader when that happens. And then you’re really managing some of the work and leading the people of the organization.

[00:03:33] Mostly your executive leadership team. Now the way to move from leader to Visionaire. And I didn’t make that word up, but Visionaire is the very top level of, of this and what you really want to probably spend most of your time on is just the thinking of around the business and really organizing this and not truly being the implementer of the organization, but this leader, the biggest challenge they have is people.

[00:03:57] The work is easy, but the people is hard. The people issues, the emotions that come with it. And so you have to really decide to play at another level. The next place you want to move a look at, in order to graduate from the leader is you’ve got to get ownership of everyone in the company. I don’t mean like everyone, maybe you have hourly employees that won’t take ownership, but anyone who’s in a critical role, who’s thinking for themselves has to take ownership of their work. They have to take ownership of the customer experience. They have to take ownership of the goals in front of them. Not just their personal goals, but also their team goals, their company goals, all of that is critical for you to be able to move up to that vision ear stand standpoint.

[00:04:39] I share the five phases of growth with you because your journey of leadership will require you to do a lot of things and let go of a lot of stuff and you will have to fire yourself. There’s lots of content on this podcast to help you with that. But I wanted to share with you this little bit of a framework.  So you can identify where you are so you can identify, what’s really getting in the way of you moving up to a higher leverage position. It’s okay. If you don’t want to be at the higher level, if you still want to be a part of this, you will always have some of the work that you do at some of the lower levels of levels. But when you truly do want to scale your company, you’ve got to move up and spend most of your time at the highest level. That’s what will grow your company the fastest.

[00:05:25] My name is Gene. I love to work with people that really understand what it means to be an extraordinary leader. Why it’s so important.

[00:05:33] Everything about what I do is to help you grow your company, create more value, but also for you to be an extraordinary leader for you to create a team of high performance and really create the culture you want. I know that’s a mouthful, but that’s what I do, for owners. If you want to sum it up, I helped them grow their business.

[00:05:54] I also helped them be the leaders that their team craves. When you are thinking about your next steps as a leader, I’d love for you to check out some of the free content we have.
